There are literally hundreds of things to experience and explore on the Ponderosa Pine Scenic Byway. You can start out in Boise, the capital of Idaho, and follow route 21 to Idaho City. Pan for gold in a stream and enjoy the rustic scenery that gold miners did years ago.

As you travel down this scenic highway, you will come to Kirkman Hot Springs. Stop here to soak and relax.

Camp out in the remote Sawtooth Wilderness Area. You will be enthralled with the hundreds of thousands of acres of ponderosa pine. There is more untamed wilderness in this area than anywhere in the Continental US.

The Ponderosa Pine Scenic Byway will lead you eventually to Stanley where you can learn much at the historical museum. If you want to only partake of outdoor activities, you should try fishing in Redfish Lake or go for running the rapids on the Salmon River.

Summer months from June to August offer the best weather for your trip.
