Overview

The incredibly long and scenic “River of No Return” flows for 425 miles through Idaho, passing through some of the most spectacular scenery in the state. For 180 miles, the Salmon River cuts through a granite-walled canyon that is a mile deep, known as the Salmon Canyon. The upper stretch of the Idaho Salmon River winds its way through the Frank Church Wilderness, and the lower portion edges along the Gospel Hump Wilderness.

Activities

Whitewater Rafting – The Salmon River, Idaho is a very popular river for floating in the summer and early fall, with Class I to Class IV whitewater. There are also plenty of places for floaters to camp along its sandy shores.

Fishing – The river provides excellent sport fishing for a variety of fish including whitefish, steelhead, rainbow trout, and cutthroat trout. Salmon, sturgeon, smallmouth bass, and many other fish also inhabit its waters.

Wildlife – A variety of splendid wildlife inhabit the rugged terrain including deer, moose, elk, black bear, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, marmot, mink, and red fox.

  • The only river gorge in North America deeper than Salmon Canyon is Hells Canyon.
  • Every summer nearly 7000 people float the Salmon River.
